Capitolo 8

While the regular activities with the kids have taken shape and are implemented every day at the Kikora center from Monday to Friday, We have decided to increase our focus on parents’ economic empowerment in order to facilitate their ability to take good care of their children at home…

Giochi di squadra genitori-figli durante il Kikora Day Children and Parents playing together during the Kikora Day

Ecco cos’e’ stato fatto in questi ultimi mesi:

Here are some of the income generating initiatives we have already started with parents:

  1. Mama Vanesia has been engaged in bead work, creating beautiful necklaces, earrings and bracelets made of traditional beads. These jewelry are mailed and sold in Italy ensuring a fair income to this single parent and a contribution to facilitate the daily activities of Kikora project.
  2. Three mums (Mama Epur, Mama Obobe and Mama Josphine) are involved in Ngumu and Mandazi making. Ngumu are local sweet fried brioches that are sold in all dukas (shops). They have been designated a small room at the Kikora center, where they cook the Ngumus and they sell their products both to us and to other shops in the neighborhood.
  3. Each Mum with the help of their child has made a vegetable garden from hemp sacks: right now they have garlic, spinach, beans, onions and coriander luxuriously growing!
  4. Coming Soon: we are planning to start another small project, where we will be donating  dairy goats to some of the parents and helping  them in managing this as a business.

Other Initiatives:

  1. House repair Project: before the arrival of the rainy season we helped five families to repair their houses that had licking roofs
  2. Health Project: we are working to ensure each family has access to the National Health Insurance. But since the standard fee (500 Ksh/month) is expensive for most of the families, we have decided to help with raising 350Ksh per family while they contribute the remaining 150 Ksh per month.

In every initiative we promote we require the parents to contribute a small amount according             to their capacity, in this way, we ensure that we don’t take away the ownership of their                         responsibilities as parents and consequently don’t create dependency on the project.

  1. Improvement for the infrastructure and decor: it was time to make the Centre more home looking and we started from painting the walls with bright and happy colors. Additionally we bought more chairs and benches in order to host the increasing number of children and parents!

On 19th of November schools closed for holidays up to January. This necessitated the activities at the Kikora project to run throughout the whole day: in the morning they learn and read, then we have lunch all together and in the afternoon we have time for many fun activities like crafts, dance, music, theater, excursions and much more!

At the beginning of November we had celebrated the first year of activities for the Kikora project: it was a joyous day full of happiness and fun. In the morning parents, children and staff took part to the team games followed by prizes awarding. In the afternoon, after eating a wonderful lunch cooked by the parents, we opened the gates to the community. The show had started with an amazing play acted by the Kikora children and continued with a performance from a local acrobat and contortionist. There was also performances from local young musicians.

This group of young artists dubbed “Blessed Maralal Artists Youth Group” from that day, developed a relation of friendship and collaboration with the children and the staff at the Kikora center: the young artists offered to visit the center weekly to train the children to express themselves through the music, dance, acrobatics, contortionism and other newfangled expressive arts.

I really believe that these youth represent a big hope for the whole of Maralal community because when art, music and dance become something to share they have the power to open the heart to love and enthusiasm for life and through them we can reach incredible results! We hope to collaborate with them in many other future initiatives!

That is all for now from Kikora, but be ready for the Kikora Christmas campaign…Coming Soon!!

Take Care,

Giorgia
