Capitolo 10 – Ritornando a Maralal

Sono tornata con la mia famiglia a Maralal a meta` Marzo, pian piano ci siamo sistemati e abbiamo riorganizzato la nostra vita in tre in questa piccola citta` che ci ha inizialmente accolto in maniera brusca, nel bel mezzo di una forte siccita`… il ritorno non e` stato facile ma ora, dopo quasi due mesi, siamo di nuovo in carreggiata e viviamo felici le nostre giornate di vita semplice, di blackout che a volte durano tre giorni di fila, di docce con le bacinelle come fossimo in campeggio, di preghiere per una pioggia che non arriva mai ma anche di sorrisi e risate, di momenti spesi con le persone senza la fretta e l’ossessione del tempo del mondo occidentale.
Pole pole, si va avanti e si costruisce la vita e questo progetto, mettendo piccole pietre, una dopo l’altra per contribuire ad un mondo un po’ migliore.
Tornando ho constatato con piacere che lo staff in mia assenza ha fatto un ottimo lavoro, portando avanti il progetto in modo responsabile e maturando notevolmente sul piano personale e lavorativo. Questo mi da` una nuova energia facendomi sentire non piu` sola ma parte di una squadra che condivide gli obiettivi e le speranze di portare un cambiamento reale. Insieme ora ci stiamo interrogando su come muoverci per migliorarci, per raggiungere piu` ragazzi in difficolta` e per essere piu` efficienti. Vogliamo aggiornare il nostro piano di monitoraggio e valutazione per poter misurare meglio il nostro lavoro e vedere chiaramente il cambiamento a cui contribuiamo. Inoltre vogliamo ridisegnare con metodo partecipativo i nostri incontri con i genitori per renderli piu` interattivi e coinvolgenti e quindi piu` efficaci.
Insomma tanti nuovi stimoli per continuare il nostro cammino che da quest’anno ha un nuovo sostenitore: la Fondazione Zanetti di Treviso si e` impegnata a sostenere Kikora nel biennio 2017/2018!
La nuova casa di Kikora
Una delle prime cose che ho fatto al mio ritorno e` stata cercare una nuova casa per Kikora. Il vecchio centro non faceva piu` al caso nostro poiche` il proprietario voleva costruire piu` unita` abitative. Con i lavori in corso e lo spazio molto ridotto non potevamo piu` portare avanti le nostre attivita`, cosi` ci siamo messi in cammino, ancora una volta, alla ricerca di una nuova casa e di un nuovo inizio….Ma non tutti i mali vengono per nuocere….in poco tempo abbiamo trovato un posto adatto a noi, e li` ci siamo trasferiti….il nuovo centro ha piu` stanze di quello precedente e ci da` la possibilita` di riservare ad ogni attivita` uno spazio riservato…Abbiamo un casetta per i ragazzi temporaneamente residenti al centro, una camera per i volontari, una stanza per le attivita` e il counseling, un ufficio e un magazzino e naturalmente dello spazio all’aperto.
Nel frattempo abbiamo trovato un pezzetto di terra che stiamo acquistando per costruire un giorno il centro Kikora che immaginiamo come un punto di riferimento per la comunita` di Maralal dove non solo Kikora potra` continuare a svolgere la propria attivita` con famiglie e bambini vulnerabili, ma molte altre attivita` a favore dei giovani e di tutta la comunita` potranno prendere piede e svilupparsi…
I’ve come back to Maralal with my family around half March, slowly we’ve settled in and we’ve organized our life as a family of three in this little town that initially has welcomed us in a rough way, in the middle of a strong drought…coming back wasn ‘t easy but now, after almost two months, we are back on track and we live happily our simple days, made of blackouts that sometimes go on for three days, of showers with the basins like we were camping, of prayers for a rain that doesn’t arrive but also of smiles and laughter, of moments spent with people without hurry and without that obsession for Time that characterized the western world.
Pole Pole, we go on, building our life and this project, putting small stones, one after another, to contribute making this world a bit better.
Coming back I have realized what a good job the staff has done while I wasn’t here, carrying on with the project responsibly as well as growing and developing personally and professionally. This gives me a renewed energy and makes me feel that I am not alone but part of a team that shares the same objectives and hope for change. Together we are now discussing how to go on to reach out to more vulnerable children and to be more efficient. We want to update our monitoring and evaluation plan to be able to better measure our work and clearly see the change we are contributing to. Moreover we want redesign our parents meetings with a participatory approach to make them more interesting and entertaining and therefore more efficient.
So, a lot new inputs to continue our journey that from this year has one more donor: the Zanetti Foundation of Treviso (Italy) has committed itself to support Kikora during the years 2017/2018 !
Kikora’s new home
One of the first things I’ve done once I came back was to look for a new centre. The old one was not suitable anymore because the landlord has decided to build some more houses in the compound…with the construction works going on and the reduced space we couldn’t run our activities there anymore, so we had to start moving around once again looking for a new place and a new beginning….But this was actually a good challenge because it gave us the chance to move in a better place where we have more space to dedicate to each activity…now we have a home for the kids living at the centre, a room for volunteers, an activity/counseling room, an office, a store and of course an outside space.
In the meanwhile we are going on with the process of purchasing a piece of land where one day we will build a community centre where not only Kikora will be able to continue to help vulnerable children and families but also many other projects for youth and for the all community will be able to take place…
